Learning Blocks

Core Educator

The Core Educator block is made up of competencies that all lead educators, regardless of their role or specialty, should be able to demonstrate proficiency in. This block is split up into three competency domains: General Core, Foundational Curriculum Design and Evaluation, and Learner Centeredness. Faculty pursuing the Educator Track should complete each of these three domains in order to fulfill the requirements of the Core Educator block. In addition to the core block, learners should complete a minimum of one elective block for each track in which they are enrolled.

Advanced Curriculum Design and Evaluation

Plan, design, implement and evaluate sound medical education for a diverse audience of learners. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those educators who currently specialize in or have greater responsibility for the design and evaluation of medical education programs, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Classroom Instruction

Plan, design, and instruct learners through classroom based learning activities appropriate for a diverse audience of learners The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those educators who currently specialize in or have greater responsibility instructing learners in a classroom setting, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Plan, design, and implement formative and summative, learning outcome aligned assessments, appropriate for a diverse audience of learners. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those educators who currently specialize in or have greater responsibility designing and implementing learner and program assessment in medical education programs, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Conduct systematic inquiry into learning in an effort to advance the practice of teaching. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those educators who currently specialize in or have greater responsibility advancing scholarship in academic medicine, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Faculty pursuing the Clinician Track should complete each of these four domains in order to fulfill the requirements of the Core Clinician block. In addition to the core block, learners should complete a minimum of one elective block for each track in which they are enrolled.

Clinical Teaching

Educate, guide and support trainees and other learners in a clinical setting. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those clinicians who currently have a greater responsibility for educating learners in their clinical practice, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Health System Improvement

Design or lead systematic efforts aimed at improving patient care and health outcomes, lowering health care costs, and/or promoting clinician well-being. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those clinicians who currently have a greater responsibility on health systems improvement initiatives, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those clinicians who currently specialize in or have a greater responsibility conducting clinical research, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Describe and apply principles and practices of leadership and management necessary for improving outcomes in a clinical practice. The higher level competencies in this elective block are appropriate for those clinicians who currently have a greater responsibility in managing and leading members of their clinical practice, or who are seeking to expand their role in that direction.

Core Scientist

The Core Scientist block is made up of competencies that all lead scientists, regardless of their role or specialty, should be able to demonstrate proficiency in. This block is split up into seven competency domains: General Core, Research Ethics, Data Management and Quality Assurance, Team Science, Research Leadership and Mentorship, Research DEI, and Business of Science. Faculty pursuing the Scientist Track should complete each of these seven domains in order to fulfill the requirements of the Core Scientist block. In addition to the core block, learners should complete a minimum of one elective block for each track in which they are enrolled.
